Today's nature calendar task:
The first wildflower - the skunk cabbage - a cousin of the calla lily.
The skunk cabbage likes to grow in wet, swampy places. I haven't seen them around here, but that's not to say they aren't there! They are a very unusual looking plant. They are able to raise the temperature of their surroundings. Apparently they smell bad, releasing a scent to attract flies and other bugs that would be attracted to carrion.
