Today's nature calendar task:
Learn of the shamrock and St. Patrick.
Not too long ago we read about St. Patrick in Trial and Triumph. The Nuthatch liked the part where his enemies tried to kill him twelve times. We haven't learned about the shamrock yet.
Updates on past nature tasks:
The task for March 14th was to observe how a stream carries and deposits soil. Today we finally got out for a hike to the stream.
When we got to the stream it was easy to show the kids how one side had been eroded, and the other side is where the stream had deposited the dirt from further upstream. The could see where the dirt had been taken away from around the roots of the trees.
We threw some sticks in the water to see how the stream was moving faster on the far side, and slower where we were standing.
Then they threw rocks in the water. A lot of rocks. For a long time.
Then they tried to make a dam, my little beavers.
We found some fossils.
And a hawk.
And the hole from a pileated woodpecker in a cedar tree. It was a lovely day.
