Winter shadows

Shadows of branches on snow

There are a few nice things about winter photography. One is that the white snow creates clean, uncluttered images. In other seasons there is always something in the background that distracts the viewer from what you are really trying to show in your picture.

The other nice thing about snow is that it reflects lots of light. I'm constantly fiddling with my camera to find a balance where the shutter speed is high enough that I don't have to worry about camera shake blurring my image (around 1/90 of a second) and that also gives me the depth of field that I'm after.

Hello! I just popped on over to check out your blog, after you left a comment over at mine.

You've got some lovely snow pictures. I've always loved snow. I grew up in places that had snow a lot, and despite the inconveniences associated with it, I liked it a lot. I always thought it was very beautiful. (In case you haven't seen it yet, I wrote some related thoughts here.

If you don't mind me asking, what part of the country do you come from? I'm from Sacramento, and we don't get snow.

Thanks for visiting Timothy! We are up in Canada. I've been enjoying your blog for awhile, the California scenery seems foreign to me this time of year.
